A DISAPPOINTING 72 HOURS
The last 72 hours have not been successful ones for our ladies. Following a narrow defeat for Sue Dixon and Janie Vickers in the County semi-final of the Golden Girls our two rink team travelled to Farnborough to play a strong Alton Social team in the quarter final of the Thornbery Trophy (the County team championship). There were few expectations of success and so it proved. A win for Wendy Aherne, Sandra Lee, Angie Rowe and Laura Butler over a Social rink that contained three members of the team that will represent England in December in the World Senior Fours was unexpected but our other rink lost heavily as Social cruised to a comfortable win. Hopes were slightly higher for this morning's Gazette Cup semi - final played at Howard Park. Opponents Basingstoke Town have been having a good season and, unlike the Thornbery Trophy match with the Town, where, Oakley shot out of the blocks and cruised to victory, this time the roles were reversed. On a tricky green Town settled quickly and leading overall by 16 shots after 5 ends they kept up the pressure winning on all three triples and running out deserved and comfortable winners.
