After Oakley's success last year in reaching Leamington in the Women's Top Club event, an away game against Fleet United, on their relatively short green, had the possibility of an early exit. Oakley started slowly with both the Triples and Fours trailing early doors, but any concern amongst the Oakley supporters was eased by strong starts in the Pairs and Singles. Oakley landed the first point when Mary Varndell claimed a comprehensive victory in the Singles and, by this time, with the Pairs well in control, the Triples leading and the Fours close, it seemed an Oakley victory was on the cards. So it proved. Both the Pairs and the Triples picked up their points and although the Fours had some ends to play, Fleet could no longer win and conceded the game. Oakley scores: Mary Varndell won 21-8; Shirley Ball and Laura Butler won 30-10; Lorna Devonish, Sue Dixon and Alice Lovett won 18-14; Diane Yarrall, Christine Williams, Angie Rowe and Janie Vickers lost 14-16 (although they had 3 ends to play when the game was conceded).
