It was a disappointing morning for Oakley's men as, having conceded home advantage, they travelled to Alexandra at Portsmouth to play in the National Top Club competition. Three players were unavailable from the previous round and with several positional changes, Oakley made a poor start, struggling to adjust to the slow pace of the green and some tricky lines. Their opponents had no such problems and were bowling well and it was soon clear that any hope of Oakley winning the match relied on winning both the singles and somehow sneaking a victory in one of the other disciplines. Ashley Nethercliffe delivered the first point to Oakley in the Two Wood Singles but when Nick Hardy, after leading for much of the game, went down in the Four Wood Singles and with the other disciplines being out-bowled it became a question of just how long it would be before Captain Ric conceded the match. This he did, with some 3 ends left to play and the team gratefully made their way to the bar.

Oakley scores: Ashley Nethercliffe won 19-15; Nick Hardy lost 14-19; Steve Devonish and Martin Vickers lost 4-23; Paul Cresswell, Sean Lassman and Fred Norris lost 4-17; Martin Smith, Jim Dixon, Spencer Kerley and Graham Tompkins lost 10-16.
