Saturday dawned damp and dull and members of Oakley BC could only hope that the weather would inmprove for our Platinum Party and BBQ to be held in the afternoon. The morning was a busy one for the Social Committee as they erected the gazebos and decorated the clubhouse and gardens with Union and St George Flags and bunting and we held our breath that the promising weather forecast would prove accurate. Today, the forecasters had it right and by the time over 70 members and friends arrived at Malshanger it was a warm and pleasant 20oC. It had been a long three years since we were last able to hold a Club BBQ and we were so pleased to be able to sit out in the sunshine and participate in the many games and competitions with this year the added attraction of being invited to use Jamie Colman's Croquet Lawn in the garden of Malshanger House. Around 4 pm we began to eat and we are grateful to all those who provided us with excellent fare. This year Martin was joined in Smiffy's kitchen by a new partner "Sean the Chef "- no one knew our Treasurer had such hidden skills! Thanks go also to the gentlemen behind the bar for keeping us "watered" throughout the afternoon with even Pimms being available at a bargain price! Events like today do not just happen and at the end of the afternoon, after President Spencer had proposed a toast to Her Majesty in recognition of her 70 years on the throne, he went on to pay thanks to all those who organised games, ran raffles and behind the scenes helped in so many ways. It was a fun afternoon and it was so good to see so many people enjoying themselves. Even the peacocks came to join us.
