On a dull morning at Malshanger and after overnight rain Oakley took on Headley in the County Mixed Top Club Competition. Oakley started as firm favourites but Headley had much the better of the early stages and took early leads in the Women's Singles, Pairs and Triples. However, it was Oakley which took the first point with Ashley Nethercliffe recording a comfortable win in the Men's Singles. The Fours were leading well but Heather Statham was struggling in her Singles and the other two disciplines were too tight to call. Gradually, however, the Triples took control and when at 13 ends they scored a 4 to lead 17-8, the match finally looked like going Oakley's way. The second point went to Headley in the Women's Singles but when the Oakley Triple gained their point, Headley decided that they would be unable to gain the necessary two points from the remaining games and conceded the match. Oakley scores: Ashley Nethercliffe won 21-5; Heather Statham lost 12-21; Leigh Allen, Ruth Bown and Nick Hardy won 18-14; Mary Varndell and Fred Norris were drawing 18-18 and Steve Devonish, Sue Dixon, Sean Lassman and Janie Vickers were leading 26-6.
