OAKLEY(MEN) OUTCLASSED
Oakley Bowling Club
After their best ever run in the National Two Rink Competition, Oakley's men faced a stiff challenge this morning with the visit of Boscombe Cliff, always one of the strongest teams in the County. Oakley made a good start, helped by Boscombe Cliff skip Nicky Jones, on the first end accidentally flicking the jack to four Oakley bowls and after 6 ends Oakley led 13-9. The 7th end was pivotal. Boscombe lead Michael Squires, against Fred Norris's rink, put up a jack, which looked short of the required 23 metres but was not challenged and Boscombe promptly picked up five shots. Mike then delivered a series of very accurate short jacks which, as a team, Boscombe played much better than Oakley so, by 14 ends, Fred's early led had disappeared and Oakley trailed overall by 13 shots. When, on the next end Alan Geary's rink picked up a six the match was all but over and finally Boscombe won 46-24 having given the home club a bowling lesson. Scores, Steve Devonish, Spencer Kerley, Bob Goodyear and Fred Norris lost 13-24; Terry Heath, Sean Lassman, Ric Newson and Ashley Nethercliffe lost 11-22.
