Prior to today, in the five events in which Oakley players have so far featured at Leamington, only Nicole Rogers has won a game (in the Champion of Champions), so we could only hope that Nicole and Heather Statham would buck the trend in the Women's Pairs. They began well enough scoring a three on the first end and leading 5-3 after 5 ends. Conceding a four and a three on the next two ends Oakley were on the back foot at 5-10 but by the 12th end they had ralied to 10-13. Four successive singles saw opponents Worcester in a strong position and when Worcester scored a six, after Heather had been agonisingly close with her final bowl, the match was all but over and eventually Worcester deservedly won by 23-13 For the girls this defeat became more painful when Worcester, in the next round were comprehensively beaten.

Comprehensive defeats were the order of the day, as at Farnborough this evening the Oakley triple of Steve Devonish ,Sean Lassman and Bob Goodyear, playing in the Area Final of the County Two Wood Triples (effectively the County quarter final) were, after good results in earlier rounds, totally outplayed by Cove going down to defeat by 22 shots to 4. Bowls they say is a game of small margins but today the margins were bigger than we would have liked.
