It was not a good morning for the two Oakley players in the Junior Singles played today at Leamington Spa. First up was Nicole Rogers, who at 9.30 am, began her quest to go one better than last year when she reached the semi-final. Nicole's usual McDonald's breakfast did her no favours today as opponent Olivia Starr from Somerset stormed out of the blocks and soon Nicole found herself 0-9 down. Gradually Nicole pulled herself back into the game and when she closed to 13-14 her supporters dared to hope. It was not to be. Nicole's usual touch was not there and with Olivia producing some big bowls she eventually emerged the deserved winner by 21-15. Soon after this game finished, Heather Statham was on the green to play a youthful opponent in Durham's Abi Porter. It was a poor start for the Oakley player as Heather trailed 3-9 but again we saw an Oakley come back with Heather taking a 18-17 lead. Her opponent then moved to 20-19 and when Heather put the first bowl of the next end on the jack it looked like the outcome would be 20-20 with a last end shot out. Abi, however, had other ideas and a fine last bowl removed Heather's bowl to clinch victory and complete a disappointing morning for the Oakley players. They do, however, have the consolation of knowing they have other opportunities over the next 10 days.
