ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TOUR
Oakley Bowling Club
Oakley bowlers returned on Tuesday from their 39th tour, this time to South Devon. Based in Paignton at the Queens Hotel, 37 members, far fewer than normal because of Covid, had a great weekend with wonderful food in the hotel. The service too was excellent and even though the rooms were snug they were well appointed and had all we needed. As usual Mervyn's coaches transported us to Paignton and next day we played matches at Torquay BC and Victoria BCs. Sunday saw everyone playing on the two greens at the Torbay Country Club and on Monday, after a morning trip to Brixham we walked the short distance from the hotel to the greens of Paignton and Paignton Torbay BCs. The Farewell Dinner on the Monday evening was fun with our coach driver Joseph giving us a song or two and new tourist Laura Butler paying tribute to President John who had perservered with arranging the tour despite all the complications and uncertainty caused by Covid. Tuesday saw us returning to home with a stop at Ilminster BC where we had an excellent lunch and our usual defeat though this was ameliorated by meeting up with a number of ex Oakley members. Leaving Ilminster for the trip home President John brought the tour to a close by announcing that the Black Mark trophy, for the most misdemeanours on tour, had been won by Linda Smith and that the fines for Black Marks meant that almost £200 would now go to St Michael's Hospice. He also reported that the Trophy for the best results on tour had been won by his predecessor as President Lesley Allard. We now look forward to the 2022 tour although the President for that year has yet to reveal the destination.
