After Sunday's final game, we held our breath that the weather would stay fine for the next few days so that we would be able to do all the work necessary to close the green for the winter. Monday dawned fair and soon members were hard at work doing tasks such as removing, power washing and storing the ditch mats, cleaning and storing the patio furniture, moving the benches under cover and tidying flower beds. Simultaneously others were scarifying, hollow tining and machine brushing the green. All was going well until mid afternoon when a machine breakdown curtailed the scarifying and although we had the necessary spare parts no one was able to fit them. Crisis was, however, averted as Ian, using his contacts, managed to get a mechanic there that evening and at 7 am next morning work resumed and by 10 am we were almost back on schedule. It was now time to sorel roll, seed and drag brush the green before the monotonous task of applying 3 tonnes of top dressing began. By now the number of volunteers had dwindled but the work was all completed on schedule and on time. Twenty or so members took part in the work, which had we employed a contractor would have cost a considerable sum. The club is enormously grateful to all who took part and hopes the tired limbs will recover soon.
