Oakley's Steve Devonish and Sean Lassman were very much the underdogs this evening as, at Farnborough, they took on Cove's father and son duo Carl and Daniel Taylor in the Northern Area Finals of the County Pairs. Neither Oakley player has ever qualified for the County Last Eights whereas their opponents, with over 50 Middleton Cup caps between them, have done so on many occasions. Cove scored two shots on the first end but it was Oakley that settled quickest leading 9-2 after 6 ends, and they hung onto this 7 shot lead until the 11th end when a Cove score of 4 followed by a single reduced the lead to just 2 shots. Many expected that Cove's greater experience would now come into play but Oakley just had the better of the next few ends and moving out to a 16-11 lead they were able, on the last two ends, to restrict Cove to 3 shot, so winning by 16-14. The Club's congratulations go to both players and we wish them the best of luck on Sunday when they compete at Banister Park in the County Quarter Finals.
