The resumed Area Final of the County Singles tonight at Hook saw Spencer Kerley attempting to recover from a 9-10 deficit in his game against John Lovell of Yateley. As on Tuesday the green was pushy and tricky and John settled quickly and, in a game where the highest score on any end was 2, had by the 21st end established a seemingly winning 19-12 lead. Spencer, however, now found the weight and by the 27th end had levelled the scores at 19-19. On the next end he held shot and with his last bowl he played what seemed to everyone the perfect bowl to lie the winning 2 shots only for it to dip at the last moment and give the shot to his opponent. The final end saw John's excellent first bowl end within 9 inches of the jack but as Spencer played his last bowl he had two bowls within a foot of the jack and needed only to turn out the shot bowl or touch the jack to take him through to the County Quarter Finals. He was so close but it was not to be and no doubt he will spend the evening reflecting on what might have been. We wish John good luck at Southampton, unless he comes up against our own Ric Newson.
