This evening at Loddon Vale Indoor Bowling Club, Oakley took on Basingstoke Town in the Final of the Cusheon Trophy - the tournament for outdoor clubs conceived many years ago by Laurie Cusheon, a former Town member. With the two clubs having contested the Final for the last 3 years and even though the Town had won for the last 2 there was no clear favourite. Town were probably the more experienced team whilst Oakley were able to draw on their two youngsters who have represented England at Under 18 level. The early stages were cagey with Oakley having just a 4-1 lead after 5 ends. The next five ends were, however, pivotal with Oakley peppering the jack, picking up a six on one end and moving into a 16-3 lead. Town were not, however, going to roll over and picking up 8 shots in 3 ends they had by 15 ends reduced the deficit to just 5 shots with Oakley leading 17-12. The Oakley supporters were now looking concerned but their team lifted their game scoring 7 shots over the next 4 ends and a further shot on the 20th end clinched the title.

Scores: Nicole Rogers, Dave Harrison, Bob Goodyear and Ashley Nethercliffe 25, Tina Rogers, Mary Morgan, Trevor Morgan and Dougie Morgan 12. Presenting the Trophy, which goes, we understand, with a cheque of £250, Loddon Vale President Paul Knowles complimented both teams on a skilfull and hard fought game played in good spirit. The photo shows the 4 players who took part this evening together with June Harvie who made a significant contribution in earlier rounds. Congratulations to them all.
