Oakley's Men's run in team competitions came to a shuddering end last night when, at home, they slumped to defeat in the County Club Championship against the Northern Powerhouse, Cove. Despite some good successes this year against Cove in individual competitions it was always going to be a tall order to come out on top against a club with so much strength in depth and which has been the Northern Area Champions for the last 9 years and so it proved. Oakley made an encouraging start and for the first third of the game were in contention but gradually Cove upped the pressure and eventually emerged comfortable winners. Oakley scores: Steve Devonish, John Yarrall, Sean Lassman and Fred Norris lost 16-20; Martin Smith, Jim Dixon, Terry Heath and Ashley Nethercliffe lost 10-18; Richard Startin, Darren Hyde, Spencer Kerley and Ted Brown lost 16-26; Malcolm Grime, Barry Lee, Ric Newson and Bob Goodyear lost - score not known.
