This morning at Malshanger, Oakley took on local rivals Basingstoke Town in the Men's National Top Club Competition and with both the regular choices for the two Singles disciplines unavailable, and with the Town having won in this event on the last occasion the teams met, Oakley's hopes of a success were not high. Team Captain Ric Newson, however, got Oakley off to a good start with a comprehensive victory in the Two Wood Singles and although Bob Goodyear was unable to overcome Neil Clarke in the Four Wood Singles, the match remained very much in the balance with Oakley at half way leading in 2 of the 3 remaining disciplines. As the game progressed further it became clear that the Town Fours would pick up their point so, for Oakley, all depended on whether the Pairs and Triples would come good over the latter stages. For Steve Devonish, playing against his old club, there was a particular motivation and he and Fred Norris duly landed the Pairs discipline and when the Triples also recorded a win Oakley had landed a somewhat surprise victory, so extending their current run of good form in the team National Competitions. In the next round Oakley will play away to Cove

Oakley scores: Ric Newson won 18-3, Bob Goodyear lost 10-21, Steve Devonish and Fred Norris won 23-13, Malcolm Grime, Barry Lee and Spencer Kerley won 26-8, Martin Smith, Terry Varndell, Sean Lassman and Ted Brown lost 11-26
