The Area Finals of the County Two Wood Singles and one of the games in the Four Wood Singles (Spencer Kerley's takes place on Tuesday 11th) took place this evening at Hook BC with three representatives from Cove, two from Oakley and one from Yateley. For all the competitors the green was rather more pushy than their own and it was always going to be a case of who was quickest to find the pace. In the Two Wood Singles, where Oakley have never had a County quarter finalist, Spencer Kerley took on Terry Thrower of Yateley. Wiith both players opting to use only one side of the green, the game was nip and tuck with only one shot between them at 15 ends. Over the next few ends, however, Spencer built up a five shot lead and when on the 19th end he nailed the jack the game was over. Meantime his regular pairs partner Ric Newson was involved in a battle with Cove's Middleton Cup skip Jim Marsland. Having recently had a bowling lesson from Jim in the Senior Pairs, Ric started as underdog and when the first few ends went Jim's way things did not look good. However the green appeared to suit Ric more than his opponent and as Ric's confidence grew he played exceptionally well and ran out a surprisingly comfortable winner, to become our first 4 wood quarter finalist since Colin Taylor. The Club's congratulations go to both players and we wish them well in the County Finals at Southampton. Spencer plays at 6 pm next Monday at Atherley and Ric at the same time at Banister Park on the 17th July.
